Bridging inside and out to highlight an amazing geological story.

EDX envisioned the design for exhibits within a new visitor center at Arches National Park. Working in collaboration with architects VCBO, we began with a building that takes advantage of impressive views of rock features outside, making the interior of the space a continuation of the exterior geology.

An essential first destination for park visitors, the visitor center tells the story of the park’s rich geological and natural history. Large-scale recreations of rock features give the experience drama and scale while providing structure for exhibit elements. Multimedia exhibits help visitors plan their trip and make a hands-on connection with park resources before they venture out.

An animation of Arches’ geologic history was conceptualized by EDX and brought to life by Somerset Studios.
In the entrance plaza, visitors are invited to touch sculptures of park wildlife and play on naturalistic boulders. These interpretive elements set the stage for the overall visitor experience.

In an interactive computer game created by EDX, visitors guess how items in a park tool shed are used and watch video interviews with park staff to learn about the many roles park employees play. The game engages adults and children alike in learning and discussion.

Daylight provides most of the illumination for the visitor center, supplemented by low-wattage overhead lights.
